  • Essay / The novel Reef by Romesh Gunesekera - 711

The novel Reef by Romesh Gunesekera is about a boy named Triton. The novel marks his maturity. As the novel progresses, young Triton grows from a boy to a man. Triton at the age of eleven” and “I told him I had a business near a restaurant” (Gunesekera1), which shows that he has grown from a boy to a man. Triton experiences a certain number of events which mark his coming of age. In my essay, I will explore these events from an insider and an outsider. In my first paragraph, I will talk about the relationship between Mr. Salgado and Nili. The relationship between Mr. Salgado and Nili crossed or broke the boundaries of the social context, because they were of different religions, which was not accepted at the time. Nili was a Christian, it is indicated when she says “a Christmas party” this indicates that she is a Christian because only Christians celebrate Christmas. Mr. Salgado is a Buddhist. When Mr. Salgado, having fallen in love, becomes more relaxed and calm, he even forgets the Carol Reef project. The arrival of Nili in the house brought joy and happiness even in the life of Mr. Slagado. Their relationship somehow involved Triton, because now Nili and Triton got along well. That's why Triton felt like they were a family. However, later, Mr. Salgado and Nili break up, because Mr. Salgado suspects that Nili is cheating on him with Robert. This is part of the context of the colonization of the country by the Americans. This follows their intense argument, where Mr. Salgado is subjected to Nili's whispers as they return from the party. This period is similar to the political unrest that surrounds them. This indicates a spoiled paradise. Where people of different religion disagree, because of failure...... middle of paper ...... one is educated, that's why he says "Stupid Kolla" (Gunesekera154), he wished that he He should have also gone to school so as not to be ostracized. In my conclusion, I would say that the majority of Triton retraces the path he has traveled. Entering Mr. Salgado's house as a naive and fearful boy. Later I left as an experienced and competent cook. Triton sets out to rise both socially and politically. He realizes that exile marks the beginning of the realization of his dreams for him. He is now aware that a school certificate distinguishes him from minorities. This distinguishes a boy from a man, a servant from an intellect with all these achievements in mind. He's embarking on a journey, he needs more to empower himself. When Mr. Salgado returns to Sri Lanka, he finds himself alone and finally living the life he dreamed of. He becomes the best chef and owns a restaurant.
