Judgmental Behavior in A&P, Revelation and The Minister's Black VeilJudging a person is very common in today's society. People judge each other every day, whether it's judging other people's appearance, which is the most common, or judging the way we behave, everyone is. guilty. However, in most cases, we pass judgment on someone without even knowing them at all. It's wrong to judge someone because it can really hurt other people's feelings, or it can backfire, and they might end up being hurt. The worst part about judging someone is the fact that most people's judgments are wrong, since most people judge negatively. In the stories "A&P", "Revelation" and "The Minister's Black Veil", the three main characters found themselves confronted with judgmental behaviors. In the stories "A&P" and "Revelation", it is the two main characters who judge, while as in the story "The Minister's Black Veil", Hooper tries to prevent people from making such judgments. John Updike, the author of the short story "A&P", tells the story of how a young supermarket employee, Sammy, judges three girls who enter the store from the beach. Sammy has many prejudices about these three girls. At the beginning of the story, when the girls first enter, he notices their appearance. They immediately catch his attention because they are not wearing what is considered appropriate attire. They wear swim tops with the straps pulled down and are barefoot. Sammy refers to one of the girls in the swimsuit as “the fat one with the tan” (Updike 553). However, he is attracted to one of the other girls who has "long, white, prima-Donna legs" (Updike 553). This girl in particular he nicknames "Queenie" because he feels she is the leader of the group. These girls are just sex symbols in Sammy's eyes. He mentioned Queenie's breasts several times and described them as "the two sweetest vanilla balls" (Updike 553).
