  • Essay / Senior Driver Risk - 2389

16 years old in New York is a very special time for a teenager who is waiting and waiting for the opportunity to take the road test and have the freedom to drive independently. For these teens to obtain their license, they must pass not only a written exam and a skills test, but also a vision test. If these skills begin to deteriorate with age, should older people's driving licenses be revoked? When these elderly drivers enter the road with impaired senses, they pose a giant threat not only to themselves, but to other drivers and pedestrians as well. The risks and dangers of allowing these elderly drivers to be on the road are reason enough to require at least one retest of each ability required to drive. As drivers become older adults, the risk of being involved in a traffic accident almost doubles. Therefore, to reduce the risk, all drivers over the age of 65 must complete annual license renewal procedures that include tests on driving ability, vision, hearing and memory. Vision and its loss is one of the most common medical symptoms associated with aging and also happens to be the most important sense required for driving. Every person over the age of 65 must undergo a vision impairment test to determine whether or not they have the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. These eye exams should be free because they are a natural result of the aging process. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, “nearly 3.5 million Americans over the age of 40 suffer some degree of vision loss, most often due to age-related problems” (Nesburn). Even at the age of 40, humans begin to suffer from vision loss and this only intensifies with age.
