Interaction and communication are important skills in school and the workplace. These skills are necessary because they contribute to personal identity and can also help adolescents prepare for future career choices. When teens play games with avatars, they can learn to better communicate and interact with others, especially if they are shy in the real world. Technological places allow a teenager to create an avatar and communicate with other avatars in the virtual world. By talking to these other avatars, teens can learn the importance of relationships and it can teach them how to do it in the real world. For teens who are shy and don't have good communication skills, these avatars can help them learn how to talk to other people and develop a common interest with those people. These avatars can also have negative side effects on communications. Some teenagers may be obsessed with these games and the lives they live in the virtual world. These avatars can cause communication problems in the real world and lead to other serious problems. In her essay "How Computers Change The Way We Think," Sherry Turkle discusses how some teens write stories for their avatars and how they can sometimes feel uncomfortable sharing their feelings and communicating with other people in reality.
