Hazel Grace Lancaster, the main character, faces internal conflict. The internal conflicts are as follows: Hazel Grace suffered from stage IV thyroid cancer when she was thirteen. When she was fourteen, her lungs began to fill with water. She couldn't breathe like a normal person. This condition made Hazel feel hopeless in her life. Every day, she fights against her cancer. She thinks she will give her parents an earthquake. This can be seen in the quote from the novel below: I had a surgical procedure called a radical neck dissection, which is about as nice as it sounds. Then the radiation. Then they tried chemo for my lung tumors. The tumors shrank, then grew. At that time, I was fourteen years old. My lungs started to fill with water. I looked pretty dead – my hands and feet swollen; my skin was cracking; my lips were perpetually blue. They have this medication that makes you not feel completely terrified that you can't breathe, and I got a large amount of it through a PICC line, and over a dozen other medications on top of that. . In the quote above, it shows that Hazel is battling her cancer. She would have had to have surgery called a radical neck dissection, radiation therapy, and then the doctor tried chemotherapy for her lung tumors when she was fourteen. Hazel Grace Lancaster is a sixteen year old girl who suffers from thyroid cancer which has affected her lungs and she must breathe with oxygen from a tank at all times of the day. Hazel feels so depressed because of her cancer and she can't breathe like a normal person, makes her parents happy, does daily activities like other teenagers, makes more friends and goes on dates. Her parents want Hazel to have a normal life like other teenagers but she always refuses him. She just wants to stay home and always with her parents because Hazel always feels like she's just a burden and that she's going to destroy her parents' lives, this always haunts her. She considers herself a grenade to her parents. This can be seen in the quote below: “I am like. As. I'm a grenade, mom. I'm a grenade and at some point I'm going to explode and I'd like to minimize casualties, okay? » The others quote Hazel about being a grenade: “I'm a grenade,” I said again. “I just want to get away from people, read books, think and be with you guys, because I can't do anything to hurt you.” “I don’t need to go out anymore. And I can't be a regular teenager, because I'm a grenade. » From the quote above, it is visible that Hazel has an internal conflict because of her feeling of depression. Hazel feels depressed because it's a grenade, it's going to explode without knowing when. She is sad because she destroys her parents' lives when she dies. Hazel Grace never falls in love with anyone until she meets Augustus Water. She falls in love with Auguste. Hazel loves Augustus and Augustus loves Hazel too, but Hazel cannot express and tells about her feelings towards Augustus. Because she feels like she's just a grenade that's going to explode one day and Hazel doesn't want to make Augustus her victim. She tells Augustus that she can't be his girlfriend, because it would hurt Augustus. The quote about Hazel loving Augustus: I nodded.
