  • Essay / Violence in video games - 1579

At least every child has played video games once in their life. There are different genres and types of video games such as action, first-person shooters, adventure, educational, role-playing, strategy and many others. 89% of video games contain violent content (Slife, 2008). The most addictive, common and popular video games among children are violent video games (Slife, 2008). Nowadays, many video games depict "real-life violence", meaning that the settings and plots of these video games are taken from real-life wars and events. For example, in Call of Duty, the plot takes place in World War II and carries out campaign missions identical to the events of World War II. By playing a video game, regardless of the genre, the person is bound to become immersed in the game. But I don't think that video games lead to violence, but rather to small aggressive thoughts and behaviors, which are temporary. It also depends on the person's mentality whether or not video games lead to violent acts and most people who play video games do not become violent at all. Violent video games do not lead to substantial real-world violence. In 2001, approximately 79% of American youth played video games, and most of the games they played were violent (Layton). But do you see children shooting or stabbing each other on a daily basis (Olson, 2004, p. 360). They're not going to randomly kill people or rob a bank. Most children who play violent video games are not acting irrationally or displaying actual violence toward others. When I talked to people in my class who played violent video games, it had no effect on them once they finished playing. The overwhelming majority of young people who play video games do not show any violence and it is only a game to...... middle of paper ...... studies because aggression does not is not synonymous with violence. Nowadays, violent video games are a big trend and most children play them, but there is no evidence that these millions of children playing video games randomly kill people or commit violent acts . Violent video games create aggressive thoughts, but these thoughts, depending on the person, can turn into violence or simply disappear. There are no longitudinal studies or scientific evidence that violent video games are the mere cause of violence or that they actually cause violence in the first place. Additional research and studies are needed to learn more about the effects of video games. But I think video games affect each person differently and a person's mentality plays a role along with other factors such as environment in whether a person becomes violent or not..
