    The 1880s were a new wave of labor organizing. The labor movement plays a huge role in our history here in the United States. “The labor movement had launched a sustained attack on the understanding of freedom based on Social Darwinism and the freedom contract” (Foner, Eric 627). During this time, many people came to the United States and became laborers in one way or another. The unification of workers resulted in many of the benefits we enjoy today in the job market. Unions formed and laws passed helped achieve goals such as the 8-hour workday, higher wages, and labor laws for women and children. During the depressions of the 1870s and 1890s, millions of workers lost their jobs or were forced to work. face pay cuts to keep their jobs.
