  • Essay / Rhetorical Analysis of Whether Everyone Should Go to College

“We want to emphasize that the personal characteristics and skills of each individual are equally important.” (Page 221, paragraph 3) Owen and Sawhill argue that success in any discipline requires dedication and self-motivation, which is another example of how the authors introduce pathos into their argument . Owen and Sawhill say that "if they don't just enroll but graduate, they can improve their life prospects." (page 220, paragraph 1) Owens and Sawhill's statement is taken to be that applying with great intentions is not enough to succeed in college. Owen and Sawhill are completely open about the fact that college isn't for everyone and that's perfectly okay. “It may be that for a student with poor grades who is hesitant to enroll in a four-year program, the best value will come from a career-oriented associate's degree or specific technical training to a career. (Page #222, paragraph #1) this statement opens the debate on both: is college worth it financially and also academically. Owens and Sawhill want their reader to understand that being pushed to achieve something you have no passion for only robs someone of their true potential.
