  • Essay / Biography of Dwight L. Moody - 1134

Dwight Lyman Moody was born February 5, 1837 in Northfield Massachusetts. He was born into a Unitarian family to Edwin and Betsy Moody. Unfortunately, his father died when Moody was only 4 years old, leaving his mother to raise the family alone and with occasional support from the Unitarian church. As a child, Moody was only able to “experience” baptism once when a Unitarian minister offered to renew it. Even though his mother was part of the church, she never persuaded him to read the Bible unless they were in Sunday school. Moody would not fully experience the glory of God until much later. Since the death of Edwin (Moody's father), it has never been easy for Betsy (Moody's mother) to provide for the family. Because of this, the highest level of education Moody was ever able to obtain was a fifth grade education. At age 17, Moody left his mother's house and found his place in society. He moved to Boston where he later became an apprentice in his uncle's shoe store (Holton's Shoe Store). Since Moody was now in his uncle's care, he was forced to go to Sunday school like he did when he was a child. The only difference was that now Moody was more involved and attentive. At the age of 18, Moody became a Christian through Edward Kimball, a Sunday school teacher and congressman whom he had met. After Moody became a Christian, he decided to move to Chicago where he would become another apprentice at a shoe store (Wiswall Brothers) where he could pursue his goal of a 100,000 fortune. Although selling shoes is Moody's current occupation, after becoming a Christian, he began to love the art of preaching the Gospel. Besides joining mission groups and prayer revivals, the very first sign of Moody's... middle of paper... ..ied Moody to put a spark in us as well. Moody was so passionate about the Lord and I think we need to love Moody and get out and share with others. These days they may not be as tolerant as they were in the 19th century, but as a Christian, that should never stop you from trying. While this is not unimportant, I believe we have also studied our individuals to show that there is much more to the person than the book will ever describe to us. I would have simply considered Moody an evangelist who created the student volunteer movement if I hadn't cast him as a person. After doing some research, I was stunned to see all the things Moody had done outside of the movement. Ultimately, I think the main point was to learn that we are more than just one person and that if we put our mind and heart into it, we can impact the world around us, just like Dwight Lyman Moody..
