  • Essay / The Horrors of the Sonderkommando, by Primo Levi

Some men were stationed in the undressing room while others worked in the crematoriums. None of these men were prepared to witness what was happening at any time in the extermination camp. Each station had its own trials, emotional and physical, that the Sonderkommando had to go through daily. The first group was placed in the undressing room and this may seem like the best place, but it was actually one of the most difficult. These men had to watch people passing through their homes and not be able to warn them of what was going to happen, for fear that mass hysteria would ensue. Once they continued toward the gas chambers, this group also had to collect any clothing left behind. They were also the last to see many of these people alive, forcing them to.
