  • Essay / Jamestown 1607: A story of survival and sacrifice

Disease, something that cannot be seen, has wiped out the majority of the settlers. The brackish water was the one that caused many deaths, with the high heat of the summer, the colonists were forced to drink brackish water or they would perish. Many fell ill and died a slow death from dehydration. (Movie). Death was a common word in Jamestown, just as Smith had reported, there being "many dead, [and] some sick." (Doc. E). Many died, “he killed about 110 settlers from starvation and disease…” (Doc. E). More and more people are dying, that's what I'm seeing, from hundreds of people imported to hundreds of people buried in graves. The environment has created these conditions that the colonists must overcome, but death is the only solution they have.
