    Pornography has been a controversial subject throughout history. With the advent of the VCR, the pornographic movie industry exploded in the 1980s, and then again with the Internet in the late 1990s. Knowing that wealth could be achieved by anyone beautiful enough and willing to have relationships having sex on camera, the industry has exploded with tons of new talent. Unfortunately, the pornographic film industry carries serious risks: STDs, mental health disorders, substance abuse, and other ill effects that should make potential performers think twice. Monthly testing for STDs, including HIV, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, has become part of life in the industry (Grudzen, et al. P72 Pathways). Higher prevalence of HPV, herpes, gonorrhea and chlamydia than HIV within the industry (Grudzen, et al. P73 Pathways). Pathways suggests that many artists feel safe from HIV, but citing Coreta Grutzen in Condom Use and High-Risk Sexual Acts in Adult Films, the lack of condom use in heterosexual sex suggests otherwise. Although they thought they would use condoms, the artists discovered that to find work they had to lose the condoms. There is a greater chance that going without a condom on set will translate into non-condom use in the real world, potentially exposing non-performers to STDs. The idea is that there are treatments for most STDs, so actors don't necessarily worry about their sexual health outside of HIV. And with the development of new HIV/AIDS drugs that extend life into middle age, it stands to reason that this may make condom use even more lax.
