  • Essay / PTSD in “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky

For most people, post-traumatic stress disorder is a soldier who just returned from war, but there are others ways for a person to get PTSD. PTSD is a combination of anxiety disorder and depression that occurs when a person experiences or witnesses a traumatic event that falls outside the scope of typical human experiences. In the book The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, the main character, Charlie is going through the death of the person dearest to his heart, his Aunt Helen. Charlie loses his Aunt Helen on his seventh birthday, but what he doesn't know is that his aunt molested him when he was little. Charlie doesn't realize this until his first year of high school. Childhood trauma can have lasting consequences; If left untreated, PTSD can manifest as anxiety and depression, much like Charlie in The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. Not much is known about what happens to people with PTSD, but what we do know is that it does. caused by a change in the nervous system, where high levels of stress hormones appear. The parts of the brain that are changed following the traumatic event are the amygdala and the hippocampus. These parts of the brain connect fear and memory. With these parts unable to function normally, this is what creates the flashbacks that the individual has. PTSD is made up of depression and anxiety, which is why it's easy to think that it's just anxiety and depression. The difference is that PTSD patients have flashbacks. Since anxiety and depression are part of PTSD, people with PTSD have friends who are problematic for them and/or keep those friends. “Teenagers usually follow at least one friend...in the middle of a journal...many teens consider therapy. They may also not go because it costs too much. So people who don't go to high-level therapy or talk to anyone might self-medicate. Ms. Tyra, counselor at LOHS, said: “…self-medication would be like giving parents medicine, drugs, alcohol and weed” (English Project). Individuals do this because it makes them feel better and although it doesn't last forever, they feel good at the time. Many teens think it's uncool to go to therapy. There are many reasons not to seek therapy, but none are good enough, because without it the individual will have very little chance of improving. They only get worse over time. The number one reason people don't go to therapy is because they think they're going to be judged, but once they get over that, they'll make great progress..
