  • Essay / Epicurus Research Paper - 1023

Week 2's information covered the topic of Epicurus and the notion that pleasure is the ultimate goal and must be accomplished in order to live a good life. It is interesting to note that Epicurus being a consequentialist, he condemned the indulgent life for reasons of self-interest and criticized political and public life which he described as a prison. For example, by having the necessary food and drinks, we already feel fulfilled and happy. Although I agree that individuals should feel free to live life to the fullest and do things for themselves, I do believe that through experiences we can live a good life. By acting altruistically, we can help others and contribute to society, with the same feeling. Tim O Keefe's reading was also interesting to read because he was very critical of Epicurus' philosophy and considered it unethical. He made a valid point in explaining that if the belief in mental pleasure is superior to physical pleasures and the absence of pain, that in itself constitutes a kind of pleasure. I disagree even more because of the Cyrenaic view that not all mental pleasures depend on bodily pleasures. for example, individuals can experience happiness and joy in conversations and ambitions. The third week's material on Stoic ethics raised the question of righteous and wicked people and whether or not they experience happiness. From the reading, Plato describes that only the righteous who is tortured is happier than the wicked who is prosperous. Furthermore, from this reading, Aristotle believed that a person who suffers the greatest misfortune is happy as one whom no one would defend if he did not argue for the sake of arguing. Before this week's material, I wouldn't have had the middle of a paper...als are supposed to add up all the pleasures and pains before taking actions. The idea of subtracting total pain from total pleasure, which will ultimately extend its idea to the "utility" aspect, where the right act is to use the greatest net utility, is a very captivating notion. However, much like the material from week 8, I find that it takes too much time for a person to calculate and adjust a situation. Individuals should take the moments that present themselves and experience different types of situations, rather than wasting time determining the best actions to take to achieve the best outcome. Of course, I think that can happen sometimes. For example, when applying for a job, individuals must be able to adjust their presentation, act professionally, and take into account everything that will lead to the possibility of getting the job..
