When was the last time you wrote in cursive in addition to writing your signature? If you answered honestly, it's probably been months or even years since you wrote a letter or document in cursive. Cursive is a style of writing that is supposed to help you write faster by connecting the flow of letters together. Handwriting is most popular among the older generation. State legislatures are currently debating whether cursive writing should be included in students' Common Core curriculum. Debates have arisen around the country about why cursive writing is or is not important for students. Do you think your child should use cursive writing in class? Realistic and understanding parents would probably answer no. Indeed, cursive writing should be eliminated from students' Common Core curriculum because it is a waste of valuable classroom time and a useless skill in our world today. People claim that cursive writing is a skill that helps children grow as students. They claim that cursive writing develops motor skills, reinforces learning and helps students connect with the past (Concordia University). Linden Batemen, an Idaho state representative, says, “Modern research indicates that more areas of the human brain are engaged when children use cursive writing” (Smyth). People point out that cursive is a style of handwriting that looks more aesthetically pleasing than print. They believe that having to encipher someone's chicken scratch is much more difficult than enciphering their cursive writing. Another major argument is that children who are not educated in cursive will be unable to read important historical documents, letters from their elders, or, even worse, will not be middle of paper...... children can be taught on an individual basis. Take a stand today and help remove cursive writing from the Common Core curriculum to help your children learn more about the important topics they will be tested on in the future.
