Global dominance of the English languageIn 2014, the most spoken language in the world is English. There are currently 1.5 billion people who speak English as a first, second or foreign language. The English language has had a great impact on the world as a whole. English remains the dominant language spoken throughout the world. Although the language has evolved over time and changed in many ways, it has always remained and become a widespread language throughout the world. This article will detail how English emerged as the dominant language and the history of its diffusion. I will also explain why the rise of language is a positive and negative development. The history of the English language first came to England in the fifth century from Northern Europe. The language first spread across the British Isles. It became a stronghold of the Celtic language. The English language began to develop after the Norman invasion of 1066, when William the Conqueror took over. It would take over 300 years for the English language to become a global language. David Crystal states in his book that “A language becomes an international language for one main reason: the political power of its people, especially their military power” (Crystal 7). Even though it would take 300 years, the language would travel quickly and spread across different continents. Many have contributed to the spread of the English language. It was in Britain that the English language originated and was first spoken. This is why the British play a key role in the history of the English language. The language spread mainly due to invasions and takeovers...... middle of paper ......inant and is used by billions of people around the world. The reason this would constitute a negative development is that "when even the largest English-speaking country, the United States, turns out to have only about 20 percent of the world's English speakers, it is clear that no one can claim exclusive property” (Crystal 130).In recent years, studies have shown that English has been around for 3,000 years. It had preceded Latin as the dominant language. I believe that English will be the dominant language for a very long time. I believe this because English has not only become a global language, but also a language that has helped the world. English has made it easier to communicate with different nations, which opens up trade and much more between countries. English has made history and shown why it is here to stay and be the dominant language..
