  • Essay / Negative Aspects of Socializing - 1642

My family owns a hardware store in Long Beach and since I started working there when I was 15, everyone who came in told me I was the future boss. Since that day, I have been preparing for this new role, taking responsibility and managing the store when my father is away. I am gaining new knowledge about the skills and values I need for this role to live up to my father's standards of business management. I think as individuals we learn as much from reverse socialization as any other socialization. It would be easy to say that an example of this would be children teaching their parents technology, but one thing I often learn from the younger generation is to not be afraid to achieve something bigger, like go to university. Kids today are more motivated to go to college, but when I was in elementary school, I didn't even know what that really was. My family is all girls when it comes to children. There are no boys and I think if we had a boy in our household he would already be running the store by himself, but the standards would be higher for him, or for me as a boy. As a boy, I think he would be expected to know everything hardware related, whereas I'm more expected to know how to run the store as far as office work goes. I think if I were the opposite sex there would be a lot more pressure on my body.
