  • Essay / Rediscovering Bill Bryson - 1436

Many think that Bill Bryson is just a travel writer, but he is much more than that. Bill Bryson spends a lot of time researching how the American language became what it is today and why it is so different from the rest of the English-speaking world. Bill Bryson studies how the solar system and Earth formed, just as he researched who Shakespeare really was in his day. He uses a comic tone in his writing, as if telling a story. Why would so many people reject his works in an educational setting? Many believe he has no place in academia, while many already teach his works abroad and here in the United States. Bill Bryson grew up in Iowa; Both his parents worked in journalism, Bryson grew up with writing essentially in his blood. Having started out as a journalist in England for local newspapers, Bryson quickly took up travel writing. Bryson doesn't just write about travel; he has written many books on the English language, science, biographies and histories. In 2005, Bryson became the 11th chancellor of Durham University and the official principal of the university where he remained until 2011. Bryson is also involved in introducing students to drama. and acting, inviting Russell Crowe to lead a workshop at the Durham Student Theatre. Bryson is very involved in promoting cultural, environmental and scientific issues and traveled to Kenya with CARE international to contribute to development programs for people stricken by poverty. Bryson is best known for his travel books written about North America, Britain, Europe and Australia. Many scholars disagree with Bryson's techniques or writing styles. In a way, they are right. The best part about writing is that everyone is immersed... middle of paper... creates discussions that in today's age are disappearing with technology. The many different aspects of Bryson's works can make a wonderful educational package of travel, literature, general science, and English language.BibliographyAndrews, John F. http://theamericanscholar.org/wry-eye-on-the- bard/. 2008.
