A Woman's StruggleOver time, women have fought for equal rights in society. Women have fought many battles to have a voice for what they believe in. In “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins, she shares the feelings of a woman as she struggles with a nervous breakdown. Her husband, John, is a well-respected doctor who believes that everything is fine with his wife and that her mental illness is just in her head. John emphasizes that he knows what's best for her and tries to calm her down with material objects that any woman would be lucky to have. Throughout the story, we see the character reveal this new personality in life. She creates a character in the wallpaper who could somehow be her alter ego. The woman also goes through different personality stages. The lady in the wallpaper supports her and allows her to express herself in a way she never was able to before. In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” this allows us to see inside the mind of a woman, as she struggles to have a voice for herself. History shows that American women were treated with little respect in the 1890s. In the 1890s, American women did not have as much say in their lives as women do today. The 1800s were known as the Progressive Era. An era of change and industrialization, but with change there are also sacrifices. In such a political era, women faded into the background. It was a time when women were expected to be seen and not heard. By the 1890s, men controlled many aspects of daily American life, as “Yellow Wallpaper” shows. Men controlled the order of the house, but women were expected to take care of the household. John got her a nice house and gave her an environment he thought was good for her, b...... middle of paper......," I said, "despite you and Jane. And I took most of the paper out, so you can’t put me back” (Perkins 175). She is Jane, a woman who was once hidden behind hideous stuffy yellow wallpaper and she is finally freed. “The Yellow Wallpaper” represents the woman who does not have a strong voice in her life. She is hidden behind her husband, her illness, and her maid throughout the story. This story gives an insight into how all women were treated in the 1890s. Jane just wanted to escape and become the woman she wanted. She wanted to write, she wanted to get better and be a better mother to her child. She was confined to a room and on a schedule that prevented her from being completely herself. “Yellow wallpaper” represents the little respect women received. Perkins depicts a woman's struggles in a strange and disturbing style in "The Yellow Wallpaper".”..
