  • Essay / Soldiers of- 722

In a time when people are losing their souls and languages lack true sincerity, poetry stands tall and shapes our lives empty of joy and pain. “Poetry is only the evidence of life. If your life burns well, poetry is only ashes” (Leonard Cohen). Forgotten and abandoned just like our hopes killed, our values violated and our dreams unrealized, poetry is abandoned alone, far from us, on a desert island of ignorance. Indeed, no one would deny the important role of poetry in our lives. However, there is an ongoing debate about the importance of poetry as a type of art in enriching our lives and its usefulness in educating children. Therefore, today some realists argue that poetry cannot contribute to society and should not be introduced to children, while other intellectuals believe that the arts can improve man's way of thinking. Opponents of poetry claim that it nourishes unbridled passions and liberates uncontrolled emotions; therefore, this would lead man to be guided by his own insatiable lusts. “Poetry nourishes and waters the passions instead of drying them up; it lets them govern, although they must be controlled, if humanity ever wants to grow in happiness and virtue” (Plato, the author of The Republic). In particular, opponents of poetry believe that passions should be more controlled. The admission of poetry into society only in the form of hymns to gods and praise to heroes is considered their only option. Furthermore, some realists believe that poetry would make young children rebellious, mutinous and ill-mannered since they have been taught to judge things by their emotions and inner feelings. On the other hand, supporters of poetry believe that it is this mirror that does everything...... middle of paper ......ns at all ages. Yet today there is a growing and vigorous debate about its admission to children at an early age. Critics of poetry insisted that poetry should not be admitted to children because it might feed the passions, spoil their nature and encourage their rebellion. On the contrary, defenders of poetry have argued that it should be presented to children to promote better communication and awareness, reinforce great values and virtues, nourish their imagination, and stimulate their creativity. However, I believe that children should be exposed to poetry from a young age, as I have personally experienced the benefits and advantages of learning poetry from a young age. I think that these soldiers of words who fight for our freedom and dignity using poems and verses as weapons can undoubtedly liberate our thinking and guarantee us a better life..
