  • Essay / An excessive amount of social media and technology has...

Today, people spend approximately seven hours and thirty-eight minutes per day on technology (Ives, p.18). Excessive use of technology, including the use of social media, has negative effects on our society as a whole. The problem is not the fact that we use technology, but it is the overuse and excessive amounts that harm us. Although technology has some advantages, such as being able to use its tools efficiently and being able to connect easily, one must consider its social and psychiatric effects when it comes to using it in excess. Some would argue that, overall, the benefits are what we should focus on. Without technology, we would not be what we are today; innovative, creative and able to communicate in a variety of ways. This generation is considered the most expressive and inventive (Kabani). We have the tools to express ourselves, such as with social media and the ability to create new apps, websites, videos and images. These are some ways that we can share who we are with the world and represent ourselves the way we want. Additionally, this generation is more receptive to other cultures and truly appreciates the many influences of diversity. Our world, including technology, brings together many cultures and is also diverse. Additionally, the use of technology for this generation has had a positive impact on their education and knowledge. Some technological tools, even applications, have helped children with disabilities and those who have difficulty in school. Thanks to the tools and convenience of completing their education online, this generation is considered the most educated in history. The number of bachelor's degrees obtained stood at 23% (Kabani). Schools have seen a positive increase...... middle of paper ...... have impacted us in all aspects of life; emotionally, mentally, socially and even physically. The benefits have indeed positively changed and improved our lives, but there is a limit that must be set on the time spent on technology and social media. Although technology has some benefits, such as the ability to use its tools effectively and connect easily, we must consider its social and psychiatric effects when it comes to using it in excess. Researchers and studies have given a recommended amount that should be spent, but today people still knowingly exceed this amount. There is no “cure” or specific way to improve ourselves, it is simply a problem that we must solve from within ourselves, starting with knowing what a realistic limit for ourselves can be and starting to realize what the negative effects can actually do. for you.
