  • Essay / Symbolism and Irony of The Story of an Hour - 1104

This story shows both irony and symbolism for a better picture of what the character was feeling. Irony is the opposite of what it was intended to do. Symbolism is any object, person, place, or experience that represents more than what it is. All three ironies were used in the story: verbal, dramatic and situational. Verbal irony is when a twist of words is used in the story. Dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that the character doesn't. The irony of the situation is that an unexpected activity occurs, the opposite of what the characters and audience expect. Irony is used the most in the story and is shown when Mrs. Mallard is in the room crying but she is not crying for her husband but for crying because she is at least free from this terrible marriage . Another example is when her husband walks through the door and Mrs. Mallard sees him and dies but dies because she was shocked that her husband was alive and it was going to be sad for the rest of her life. The character in the story is Louise Mallard. and she has a heart problem and she can't take things easy. Her husband loved her to death and he still thinks so right after her death. She wanted to start a new life without her husband, but she found out later and died to her husband's shock at the front door. Her emotional problems were the new life she was going to start and the freedom that was going to come to her. “Sobs rose to her throat and shook her like a child who has cried herself to sleep and continues to sob in her dreams.” She cried because of the things she so wanted to happen to her and the freedom that came with it. She wasn't emotional enough to accept bad news, but when her husband died, she didn't cry over his death. She cried because she was going to be free middle of paper......the sadness of her new life is ruined because her husband wasn't dead at all.The moral of the story was to not being in a relationship where one person loves the other but the other person doesn't feel the same way and wants to end the relationship but can't get out of it. You shouldn't give up on someone you know would never give up on you even though they were with you throughout your relationship. You shouldn't move forward when you don't even know if it actually happened or not, but you heard a rumor and believed it and it ended up killing you. All you need is for one person in the relationship to try and ask the other person to try and that will fix the relationship.
