  • Essay / Society is the problem: the standard of beauty - 743

There are over seven billion people on earth and each of them is different. Even though people say that being different is unique, they are wrong. Society has established a standard of beauty, with the help of the media and celebrities, that makes people question their appearance. This standard is just a definition of what society considers “beautiful.” This idea is one that almost everyone knows and can relate to. No one on this planet is exactly the same, but people still feel the need to live up to that standard. Everyone has two sides; there is the one who says “you are perfect the way you are”, while the other demeans you and you say to yourself “I have to change, I have to fit in”. There will always be one side that cares and another that doesn't. Susan Bordo states in her article "Never Just Pictures" that children grow up knowing they will never be thin enough. We think that being fat is the worst thing ever. The people responsible for this are the media, celebrities, models and fashion designers. All of these factors play an important role in the development of the norm and how people perceive themselves. Everyone dreams of being the best they can be in every aspect. But to achieve this, most believe that one of the main factors is external beauty. So people look at celebrities and fashion designers and think that to be accepted, they have to look like them. This is when they take drastic measures to change their appearance because they have been influenced by the media's idea of "beautiful." This feeling mainly affects women, but in recent years the gender gap has narrowed. Now men also feel the need to look good because of the media. On TV instead of infomercials... middle of paper...... being beautiful, having good hair and makeup are what beauty should be perceived as. Every time someone flips through a magazine, sees a photo of a model, and wishes they looked like her, they are contributing to an idea that disgusts them. People might think they never did anything to support this, but everyone did. Everyone feels pressure from society, because it's pressure from us. The only way to stop this is to not support the "things" that push this idea forward and not fuel it, so in the end it will die. The standard of beauty will always be there unless we do something to change it. But each person will always have this dual personality. One side might even manifest itself more and take control of its life. Remember that you are perfect in your area and things will improve slowly but surely..
