  • Essay / Improving school spirit at the University of Waterloo

University of Waterloo administrators are disappointed with the lack of school spirit. School spirit can be defined as a person's emotional support towards their educational institution. To be honest, our university certainly has many clubs, sports, and other non-academic programs to join on campus, however, it doesn't seem to encourage students to join compared to other schools. The following will demonstrate why the university needs to improve student engagement and how it will benefit both of them in the future. At the University of Waterloo, many students do not attend games like football, basketball and other school sports. . Third-year student and football enthusiast Rubal Singh says, “The stadium is mostly filled with friends and family. There aren't many students. » Compared to other schools in the province like the University of Guelph and Western University, the stadiums are generally full and have many unrelated fans. After interviewing several of my friends who attend our university, a mutual consensus was that our school encourages more of an academic program than a social connection program. According to Maclean's 2013 annual statistics, the University of Waterloo was ranked as Canada's most innovative and comprehensive university. Impressive, nevertheless, could these statistics mean that the University doesn't have time to be the most lively either? Could academic workload have negative effects on extracurricular activities? I believe it is possible. Having a highly reputable school attached to your resume is very important to a student's success in the job market, but that doesn't mean the school should place any less emphasis on "school spirit." Our school holds approximately 30,000 students......middle of paper......riors! We can do better than that! I hope that the University of Waterloo will implement my suggestions and in the years to come continue to improve their school spirit to make it beneficial not only for the University but also for the students.
