  • Essay / Hollywood Vs. America by Michael Medved - 873

The book that stood out to me the most this semester was "Hollywood Vs. America". The reason I seemed to disagree with this book most of the time was because Medved didn't have of no solid argument or source The only sources he had in the book were people who had basically the same mindset and worldview as him. This book stood out to me above all, simply because. it made me angry every time I read it I really thought, from the first pages, that this would be a book that I would like. I thought Medved would have good reason to think that the films were against the. American popular culture, based on his and others' opinions The book would have been great if it had surveys of the population around it The survey indicates what the actual American population thought of certain films; , not his opinion on what American culture should think of these films. I thought this would make a pretty good extended answer; talk about something that excited you! The way Medved spoke about certain films or musical genres was extremely rude and biased. From the first pages, I read something that got under my skin. Medved talks about how Michael Jackson released his song "Black or White." The song is about racial harmony within the family at a time when it was not entirely culturally acceptable to be married to someone of an opposite race. Medved continues to discuss what is happening in the clip. This part of his performance is what bothers me the most: "The most awkward transformation comes near the end of this incoherent epic... A stalking panther miraculously transforms into Michael Jackson as we've never seen him before... Michael captures the repetition.... .. middle of paper ......absurd personally, and I don't feel like Christianity is being targeted; Catholicism is. In conclusion, I found a quote from Michael Medved that I completely agree with: “This same habitual blindness to the spiritual and substantive dimensions of every important challenge continues to handicap Hollywood.” I think his point here is that the Hollywood industry always misses the mark when it comes to spirituality and that is his whole meaning throughout the book. Whether I agree with his wording or not, I am a Christian and I should be concerned about how the media influences the minds of the world around me. I am called to be the light in this world, and I believe this is the one area in which Medved and I agree; in a way we both believe that the world is under attack and it is our duty to show light to this dark world..
