  • Essay / Roles a Leader Plays in an Organization - 1108

Someone once said “With great power comes great responsibility,” and although old and clichéd, that quote still rings true, no matter what. It doesn't matter who, what or where anyone is. The criminal justice system is a hierarchy of the highest level in the United States and, as such, requires much stricter management and delegation of authority than any other branch of government. Within the justice system, there are different branches which each have their own hierarchy: leaders, intermediaries and “followers”. Leaders in a hierarchy almost always have the most pressure, which means having the most duties within the organization. These tasks involve working around an organization's power, politics, behavior, culture, ethical boundaries, and more. Stojkovic, Kalinich, and Klofas (2012) describe leadership as "a process that effectively achieves organizational goals...administrators [who] can learn skills...Leadership is a group process...[and] leadership in bureaucracies public institutions, such as criminal justice agencies, [is] inherently political and must be examined in the political arena” (pp. 192-193). According to this definition, among the key elements that a good administrator (leader) needs is that of power and political behavior. The importance of power for administrators is that without power, administrators will never be able to do anything or direct anyone. Power gives directors the legal authority and duty to ensure that their organization is running well, that their employees are happy and working, and that they enjoy the privileges associated with being a leader. Without power, the administrator would be nothing more than a simple employee, and nothing within the organization would...... middle of paper ......anizational (when two agencies (or departments) argue over how something will be achieved) - this could lead to one of the parties losing money, or a potential asset, or it could even result in the branch being eliminated altogether, making everything more difficult for everyone. A leader has many roles within a company such as: being ethical, making decisions, working within the boundaries of culture and also being ethical. The best way for them to do this is to use the power they have in their seat of authority and the political behavior that comes with their job. Works Cited Stojkovic, S., Kalinich, D. and Klofas, J.
