  • Essay / Retail Hell - 721

If there's one thing I hate most about working in retail, it's the customers. I only started working at Menards a few months ago, but quickly discovered that I was extremely annoyed and irritated by the customers. Every day I juggle menial tasks and dealing with strangers who think they are better than me. Now I understand that I was hired on the hardware "team" to help customers in the best way possible, but I never imagined that I would have to take care of them like a parent takes care of a child. I swear you could put every customer into specific categories. The three most annoying customers, which I bet you can find in any retail store, are categorized as follows: people who shop and drop them off, people who say, "I'm just looking ". and the always dreaded last-minute shopper before the store closes. First there are the people who “buy and deposit”. These customers are probably the most common source of annoyance in retail today. They hide among the crowds, items in hand, ready to stumble into random places at any moment because they have nothing better to do with their lives. Personally, I've never seen a "shop and drop" in action, but I have found merchandise I gave to a guest in the deep shadows of a random shelf in another section of the store. Now I can understand why someone would think nails can be placed next to large slabs of drywall instead of the nail island, but I never understand why a large table belongs near flower beds Martin 2 in the garden center. Even worse is when I have a customer who wants me to help them put a large item such as a five-tier steel shelf into their cart, only to find that same cart an hour later, with the shelf always... .. middle of paper ...... it's not really that bad, especially for a part-time job to earn extra pocket money. The pay, depending on the store, is enough to fill half your gas tank for the week, or pay 1/4 of the rather large dental bill you just received in the mail, but I digress . Honestly, I really enjoy helping customers to the best of my ability, as long as they are nice to me. Nothing makes me smile more than when I make a good sale. Some clients are awesome! In fact, I personally know several who are loyal and follow my advice or randomly come over to discuss gear. When I have an extremely friendly client, it helps break the zombie feeling of doing mindless tasks. Unfortunately, all it takes is one customer who "buys and deposits", says, "I'm just looking", or one last minute before closing the buyer, to ruin my day..
