    When I emigrated to Canada, I was bullied because of my ethnicity, immigration status and socio-economic status -economic. I was vulnerable to harassment and needed multiple layers of protection, which were not provided by the school. Schools should have a duty to provide and foster a safe and inclusive learning environment, free from discrimination. I didn't view school as a safe space. Minority students are disadvantaged early on, which hinders their success. Schools should provide “therapeutic” spaces where students can go to work despite the trauma resulting from harassment and discrimination; “receive the affirmation provided by support groups and learn to know and accept who they are by discovering their differences” (Kumashiro, 2002, p. 35).
