This article will examine the behavior of boys in a primary school classroom from the perspective of an education professional. More specifically, how to modify the aggressive behavior of boys who speak out of turn in class. It will examine the effect of behavior-specific praise on aggressive behavior. Multiple forms of differential reinforcement will also be examined in regards to how to transform a boy who acts out for attention into a boy who understands that his behavior is unnecessary. The differences between girls and boys in a primary school class will also be taken into account. Through this process, the teacher, the child and the rest of the class will benefit. This article will start with ideas for general classroom management and then refine specific recommendations for individual cases. Behavior of boys in a primary school classroom “Simply targeting interventions at individual children in the classroom may not actually solve a classroom behavior problem” (Parsonson, p.16). Many different factors come into play when observing a child who is misbehaving. Young boys who act out in class don't always have an exact reason for their behavior. Exactly why they are speaking or acting is ambiguous – previous cues are not always clear. As a teacher, one must be aware of this, understand that there are many reasons behind a child and seek to discover what works best for each child in order to modify negative behavior while encouraging alternative behavior. Behavior-specific praise and multiple forms of differential reinforcement can be used to break the child's habits.
