  • Essay / Video Games - 2197

Do video games really need to be censored by the United States government? Over the past few years, a controversial lawsuit has been under discussion to censor video games. This case seeks to get the United States government to ban the sale of all video games that may include graphic violence, virtual sex, violent and bloody scenes, partial or full nudity, depiction of behavior criminal or other provocative and objectionable material (Mears, Para 1). There are many arguments to justify or not censor video games. Video games should not be censored because parents should be responsible in raising their children, it is unconstitutional, video game companies already take enough steps to censor their products, and censorship would have a considerable impact on the video game industry. In recent years, there has been the first ever video game court case called Schwarzenegger v. Entertainment Merchants Association, attempting to pass a law against the sale or rental of violent games to minors (Scholssman, Para 1). This case has been going on for several years and recently escalated all the way to the Supreme Court. On the morning of November 2, 2010, the United States Supreme Court began hearing oral arguments in this case. both sides gave reasons why they believed the bill should be approved or rejected. During the oral arguments of the Californian Representative; Justice Scalia pointed out that even Grimm's Fairy Tales, a series of German fairy tales for households and children, are violent and could be excluded by law. This raised an instant discussion whether or not this could be extended to just video games or all sources of entertainment...... middle of paper ......ame Votes Network says that "the government regulation based on game content will stifle creativity, and will have a chilling effect on game publishers who may feel the need to dilute content due to the threat of government action and fines” (2010, paragraph 2).These regulations will impose significant limitations on video game producers that producers of other forms of media do not face. This case is still ongoing and being challenged in the Supreme Court. has won all the cases in the lower courts gives them a huge advantage in the Supreme Court's decision. They expect the judgment to be handed down in late February or early March 2011, but no later than June, because it is. It is on this date that the term of office of the Supreme Court ends. When a decision is made there will be no warning and once the decision is overturned everyone will have to go from there..
