  • Essay / The Doctrine of the Trinity - 879

The TrinityThe doctrine of the Trinity, as seen in the Christian Bible, is paramount to the Christian faith. The word “Trinity” does not actually appear in the Bible; it is a theological label intended to summarize certain teachings from certain passages of Scripture, and it is crucial to fully understanding what God is like, how he relates to us, and how we relate to him. It can also raise many difficult questions, including: What does it mean that God is a Trinity? Although it is difficult for us to understand everything about the Trinity, it is entirely possible to answer questions like this and fully understand what it means for God to be three in one. The doctrine of the Trinity, seen in the Holy Bible, means that there is one God who eternally subsists in the form of three distinct persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Although expressed differently, God is one in essence and three in person. If we look closer, we can see three important principles. One being, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are each distinct Persons, the second is that each Person is fully God, and the last is that there is only one God. In the Bible, for example, the Father is referred to as God, Jesus as God, and the Holy Spirit as God. If one were to simply read these passages, it might seem somewhat contradictory. You might think that these are three different ways of seeing God, or perhaps three different roles that God plays. However, the Bible also indicates that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are all distinct persons. For example, since God sent his son Jesus into the world, as shown in the book of John, he cannot be the same person as the Son. Additionally, after Jesus returned to God, the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit to the middle of paper... alone, the Son alone, or the Holy Spirit alone. "If each person of the Trinity is distinct and yet fully God, it is obvious that some confusion may arise as to how there could be more than one God, although we should not be confused, for in the Scriptures, it is clear that there is only one God from the Scripture: “There is no God but me, one righteous God, and one Savior; not besides me and be saved, for I am God, and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:21-22; Exodus 15:11; Deuteronomy 4:35; 6:4-5; 32:39; 1 Samuel 2:2; 1 Kings 8:60). Having seen that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, that they are each fully God, and that there is no However, there is only one God, we must conclude that all three Persons are the same God. In other words, there is one God who exists in the form of three distinct persons...
