  • Essay / Crossed by Gary Paulsen - 852

A long, long time ago, God decided to punish the wicked, but before doing so, he asked Noah to build an ark and fill it with two of everything the animals he could find. with his family. Animals and humans. The book I would like to use throughout this essay is “Crossing,” by Gary Paulsen. This book was set in Juarez, Mexico, where a bridge can mean so many things. Each character in this book has been compared to an animal, to help us better understand each of them. Each of them is also different. From the shape of their eyes to the way they react to something, that's what makes each of them different and special. Paulson compares animals and humans based on their similar characteristics and behaviors. Palson has used many animal comparisons to characters throughout this book, but I will only use three in this essay. The first comparison occurred on page seventy-eight of Crossing. An example of an animal comparison between the main character Manny was cited: “..oh yes, it was the monkey. There was a monkey attached to a chain attached to a wire between two trees. I believe there are two reasons why Gary Paulsen compared the monkey, this particular animal, to Many, this particular character. The first reason is pretty obvious, between Manny and the monkey. Apes are believed to be lower IQ humans, another form of human that shares many similarities and resemblances in different areas with humans. The second reason is their situation, both without freedom. What is freedom? No one can define the word “freedom”. But the fundamental definition of freedom is when one is free from fear, free from bondage and hurt. Do the monkey and Manny have any? No, they have nothing above. Manny, is all middle of paper...despite his unique personality, identity and destiny. They are like us, but they live in books. To me, we can read their stories and use what we read to connect them to what we already knew. Manny, the main character in “Crossing,” was compared to a monkey tied up with chains, which felt like a loss of freedom for both of them. Manny compared the group of people who want to catch him and sell them to the hawks to point out that he can't fight the hawks. either he runs or he is caught, he has no choice. He also compared how the people in the third example fought with street dogs. Throughout our transformation throughout history, we have had a very close relationship with animals. This is what Gary Paulsen, the author of “Crossing”, tried to do in “Crossing”, to compare the character he had created to animals..
