  • Essay / Pyramus of Homer and Romeo and...

Man has this awesome tool called imagination which allows him to imagine ideas and concepts that did not exist before. Although everyone's imagination is different, sometimes the same idea is used and transformed in another person's work. This is the case of Pyramus and Thisbe by Homer and Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. To a normal person, several similarities are obvious between the two works. Some similarities between the texts of Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and Thisbe are: the two pairs of lovers wanting to run away together, the parents' ignorance on the subject and the lovers killing each other thinking that the other was dead. The first way in which Romeo and Juliet Juliet is similar to Pyramus and Thisbe are the two lovers who want to run away together. With Pyramus and Thisbe, the lovers could not be together and so were willing to leave everything behind to be together for the rest of their lives. In the case of Romeo and Juliet, they were put under a lot more pressure and stress to make their decision. After Romeo was banished, Juliet had to feign death and when Romeo came for her, they had to leave Verona and never return. This is what is said in Act IV, scene I, lines 116 and 117: “Will see to your awakening, and this very night Romeo will take you from here to Mantua. » These words are spoken by Brother Laurent explaining his plan to Juliette. This was supposed to get them out of Verona without anyone chasing her and bringing her back to marry Paris. The couples' decision to run away from home and leave everything behind was surely a common thought in their minds. Another reason why Romeo and Juliet are like Pyramus and Thisbe is their parents' ignorance and obvious dislike for their child's chosen partner. In Pyr...... middle of paper ......ken by Juliet in Act V, scene iii, line 170, “This is your sheath; there rust, and let me die. She says this right before she plunges him into herself, killing herself to hopefully have eternal life with Romeo. Certainly, the couples suicide scene was similar to the others. Imagination is a crazy, wild creature that cannot be contained or restricted, only embraced and honed to your specifications and thoughts. William Shakespeare was obviously inspired by perhaps the same thing as the author of Pyramus and Thisbe. What this influence was, we may never know. However, we will know that the authors were incredibly gifted and used the power of literature to offer their gift to the world. It leaves everyone wondering what inspired two different stories, very similar in plot, to the writers, and how the inspiration was passed down for thousands of years between the two men..
