  • Essay / Civilizing Huckleberry Finn - 836

Huckleberry Finn has been considered an excellent piece of American history. It’s a wonderful story and an accurate account of American culture. Unfortunately, there are those who want to change this story, not only in schools but around the world. Not for the better, however, to censor all “politically incorrect phrases.” To spoil a wonderful deep story! Huckleberry Finn should not be censored because history should not be forgotten or changed, students should not be denied useful literature and knowledge of history, American culture should also be preserved and understood by all, and finally, not to be so superficial, see in the period and understand the depth of the story. In one article (Huck Finn Censorship and Word Controversy #1), there was a son writing an essay about Huck Finn, and he used a variety of racially offensive words. The mother especially did not accept that her sons wrote. She said: "You can't write that! It sounds racist!" In fact, these were just quotes from the book, and completely unbiased. Not to mention the constant use of “broken English” either. Which was true, his essay simply contained quotes and was actually not meant to be racist. Later in the article it was stated: "Americans are so wedded to political correctness that we need to relax." Yet another true fact. People are so preoccupied with good words that they forget that there may be meaning behind them. Also, how can students properly learn the story of Jacob #2 if it is sanitized for them. They would have an inaccurate idea of history. This would be completely unacceptable, there is a quote that applies to this situation; “Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.” I can't pretend bad things haven't happened in the past. Huck Finn should be protected from any "updating or cleaning". History is an important part of American culture and we must preserve it. Removing books like these from the school curriculum simply deprives children of exposure to classic works of literature. No matter how “advanced” we think we are, it’s not true and should never happen. Even whether the book is classic or not, censorship would undermine the author's words and diminish the story. Many people wishing to censor often like to impose their own beliefs and ideals, assuming it is offensive. We need to let go of these ideas of people just wanting to change for their own good. Huck Finn should be left as is, a true, wonderful and major part of American culture..
