While Arnel was the dilettante father, one who is often away from home but maintains a relationship with the children, grandfather Efren was there to take care of Procopio. Grandfather Efren lived with Procopio and represented the generative type father. From my reading, a generative father is one who spends a lot of time with his children and enjoys being with them in such a way that fatherhood becomes an opportunity for his own growth and development. Grandfather Efren loved his grandson and took care of him as if he were his only son. Grandpa Efren even admitted to Procopio that he was his favorite grandchild. For some reason, Grandpa Efren, a former police officer, had no problem expressing his feelings. It was old-fashioned in that sense. Procopio was ashamed to even discuss this situation with his family, especially his grandfather Efren. Procopio is now unsure of his future and even questions his loyalty to his father and his paternal side of the family. Procopio feared that his grandfather would know about the family secret and would hate to think that he would hide this kind of secret.
