Sacred groves are groves of trees or several hectares of forest established and controlled by local communities. They have special religious significance for various cultures around the world, particularly Celtic, Baltic, Germanic, Ancient Greek, Near Eastern, Roman, Slavic, Indian and Japanese cultures. Today, sacred groves are mainly found in the United States of America, India, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Nigeria and Ghana.
