    Sacred groves are groves of trees or several hectares of forest established and controlled by local communities. They have special religious significance for various cultures around the world, particularly Celtic, Baltic, Germanic, Ancient Greek, Near Eastern, Roman, Slavic, Indian and Japanese cultures. Today, sacred groves are mainly found in the United States of America, India, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Nigeria and Ghana. There are three types of sacred groves: temple groves, groves near burial or cremation sites, and traditional sacred groves located in places where village deities reside and protect the community; the local people believe that any kind of disturbance or upheaval of the local deities will offend them and cause disease, natural calamity or crop failure.
