  • Essay / The Time Machine - 2962

Chapters 1 and 2SummaryThe Time Traveler is at home and talking to a group of men who understand the narrator. He gives a lecture on the fourth dimension. He tells them that a cube exists not only in space, but also in time. Time is the fourth dimension. Many of them are skeptical. The TimeTraveller claims that one should be able to move in the fourth dimension just as one can move in the other three. After all, he notes, we are constantly moving forward in time, why not move forward faster or slower or even backward? He created a miniature time machine, the size of a clock, out of ivory and crystal. The TimeTraveller explains that one lever sends the machine into the future and the other sends it into the past. He asks one of the guests to press the forward lever, and the machine disappears with a little gust of wind. He claims that the machine is now moving towards the future. The guests ask why they still can't see him, since they too are heading into the future, and the Time Traveler explains that he is moving too fast to be seen, like the spokes of a wheel or a rolling ball. high speed. The guests are amazed. The Traveler then shows them a much larger machine, with which he plans to explore time. The narrator concludes that few of the guests believed the Time Traveler, because he was a very intelligent man, prone to elaborate pranks. The narrator returns to his home for dinner the following week. Guests include some of the men from the previous week and some new guests. They were asked to start dinner without their host. When he walks in, he's incredibly dusty and disheveled. He quickly drinks champagne, then goes to wash. The narrator suggests to the other guests that their host has traveled back in time. The others are incredulous and respond with sarcastic remarks. When the Time Traveler is finally ready to tell his story, the guests quickly raise objections. The Time Traveler says he doesn't have the energy to argue and will only speak if everyone agrees not to interrupt him. The guests agree and become more and more attentive as the story begins. Chapters 3 and 4SummaryThe Time Traveler gets on his machine and pushes the front lever a little. He feels dizzy and when he looks at the clock in his laboratory, he sees that five hours have passed. He then presses the advance lever a little more.
