  • Essay / Alternative Renewable Energy - 699

With the depletion of fossil fuel resources comes speculation and debate about alternative energy sources. The world, including the Philippines, is virtually dependent on a dwindling non-renewable energy source. Today, experts are debating and considering three options: nuclear, solar or wind energy. Everyone is used to the bad image of nuclear energy, especially following the Chernobyl and Fukushima incidents. Popular belief is that radiation from a nuclear meltdown is very harmful to humans and other living things – which is true – and that nuclear power plants are very dangerous and not ideal – which is not the case. According to Smith, et. al (sd), all nuclear disasters that have occurred have been caused by human errors and natural disasters like tsunamis, not by system failure. Putting aside false beliefs, with proper engineering and proper maintenance by experts, a nuclear power plant is an ideal and viable source of energy for the following reasons: ➢ Building a nuclear power plant requires less space than solar or wind farms. With the current overpopulation problem in the Philippines, taking up less space for energy production is more ideal and less insulting to Filipino families who live under bridges just to fit in in cities. It is also a better option for industrialists because less land space means less costs, at least in terms of land ownership. ➢ Nuclear energy is very efficient and reliable. Unlike wind and solar farms, nuclear power plants can operate 24 hours a day, unless subject to maintenance, and can produce constant energy output that is not affected by weather conditions. Solar energy relies on the sun to produce solar energy, making it impo...... middle of paper ......ut. This was due to faulty design and poor compliance with safety measures. Fukushima was also caused by faulty design, given that the area it was built on was susceptible to tsunami. One of the reasons the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was shut down was strong public opinion against the use of nuclear power. If only people were well informed and not prejudiced against building a factory that would help our economy and reduce our poverty a little, then we would probably be a little more successful right now. Another reason is the area where the power plant was built: an earthquake-prone area, near a volcanic formation, which poses a threat to public health. Again, overall, with proper maintenance, engineering and expertise, nuclear power is a very good investment, especially for the Philippines in need of a cheap but beneficial source of energy..
