Before referring the patient for therapy, the provider should use a diagnostic testing tool to help further determine the degree of the delay. The Denver Joint Screening Exam could be used to screen for articulation problems in the patient, as well as the Language Fundamentals - Preschool Clinical Assessment which detects receptive and expressive language problems. Additionally, caregivers should be encouraged to stimulate the child. This can be done by reading to the child daily, displaying appropriate language, using clear and simple sentences and language, and providing the child with opportunities to interact with other children. Likewise, television viewing should be limited and caregivers should continually encourage it. Learn that with age, most speech errors disappear.
