  • Essay / Depression Nature Vs Nurture - 711

I think there needs to be a balance between nature and nurture regarding the behaviors or disorders we develop. I have personal experience with this regarding depression. I have an older brother or sister, they are only 16 months older than me, so we developed, grew and generally learned around the same time. We grew up in the same environment, went through the same challenges and enjoyed fun times as a family. As adults, we are both successful at the post-secondary level; we also both have the same direct and determined attitude when it comes to achieving our goals. However, despite our similarities, my brother was recently diagnosed with manic depression as well as paranoid psychosis. Despite our identical environment and genetic similarities, only one of us developed a mental illness. If only nature or nurture were responsible for the characteristics or disorders we develop; according to this school of thought, I would also have lived with something similar to my sibling. This difference reinforces my view that all behaviors and disorders are the result of a spectrum of variability between the influences of our genetic susceptibility and those of our environment.
