  • Essay / Western media - 1050

Africa is nevertheless one of the richest continents in terms of resources and human population; it is the poorest and least developed continent. A significant part of the Western population is unaware of Africa and has a negative attitude towards Africa. “Most of them have certain images of Africa that they consider true or real”, all these images are acquired through what they receive as news in the Western media (Michira, 2002). Words often used to describe Africa in the West are: dark, jungle, wild, underdeveloped, third world, hunger, disease, starvation, drought, lack of history and culture. This essay will analyze reporting on Africa with the help of The Independent and The Guardian newspapers; The reports will cover a period of one week, from August 24, 2010 to August 30, 2010. This essay will demonstrate that Western media reporting on Africa converges entirely on unfavorable points of view and ignores the positive points. This will also show that the reporting is negative, as it can therefore be argued that Western media audiences always expect dismal news from Africa; information networks only supply according to demand. Western media reports focus excessively on poverty, this view is supported by (Howden, 2010) a news article from The Independent newspaper; in which he paints a damaging portrait of the South African government by comparing it to the past apartheid regime. The report is inaccurate and suggests that the South African government is going backwards in denying freedom of expression and further accuses the government of being corrupt and ineffective. This is a flawed view, because South Africa is one of the best examples of development that...... middle of document ...... could account for Africa's problems, but it It should be noted that it tends to be unbalanced and mostly focuses on the negative aspects and ultimately ignores the advances and improvements witnessed every day on the African continent. Furthermore, (Chavis, 1998) adds that reports on African art, African music, African films and documentaries are never covered or are simply ignored by Western media. In conclusion, with the help of The Independent and The Guardian newspapers; it can therefore be said that Western reporting on Africa is mostly negative and always focused on poverty, misery and violence in particular. The type of media coverage given to Africa is unbalanced and demonstrates a degrading image that Africa still has in Western societies. Today.
