  • Essay / How does stress affect the LGBT community? - 1452

There have been many recent studies done on stress and how stress affects people physically, emotionally, and/or psychologically. Although the number of people who are part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community is considerably lower than that of the general public; Members of the LGBT community face various issues that cause stress that members of the heterosexual community do not face. Some of these include stress due to identity exploration and acceptance of their sexuality, self-esteem issues, lack of support systems; possible victimization due to assault and/or battery; difficulties and limitations of dating and finding balance in their lives. Little is known about the lifestyle-related levels of happiness and internal harmony of bisexual men, because few studies have been conducted solely on them and because their numbers are limited. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct a study measuring lifestyle satisfaction levels to compare the differences in these levels between closeted and openly gay/bisexual men. Conducting this type of research would then improve a better understanding of the effects. (if any) stressors, such as the inability to express oneself openly due to one's sexuality, pose to bisexual men. By targeting bisexual men aged 18 to 70 (independent variable), we can compare them by separating those who are in the closet and those who are openly gay or bisexual. Additionally, the stress associated with being in the closet or openly gay/bisexual would affect the level of gratification and harmony within their lifestyle (dependent variable). The level of gratification and harmony would be measured on a...... middle of paper ...... men seem more confident, help them to be more socially competent and let them more easily discuss their sexuality with the others. .ConclusionI am sure that the "gay movement" has actually benefited many bisexual men through liberalizing attitudes towards homosexuality, but it is very clear that the world actually needs more bisexual people. This statement comes from the importance of bisexual men finding support systems and a sense of community, pride and camaraderie, just like their gay counterparts. There have been many bisexual men in history, for example, it is even said that Alexander the Great was indeed bisexual, but I believe that suppressing one's sexual orientation will affect that person in a negative way and as RuPaul has well said: “If you don't love yourself, how are you going to love someone else?”
