  • Essay / White Noise, by Don Delillo - 1632

Webster's Dictionary defines distraction as a mental disorder. Don Delillo, the author of the novel White Noise, shows how distractions are nothing but a mental disorder towards the characters in the novel and this is proven in several different circumstances. Characters use distractions to avoid coming to terms with the problems they encounter in their daily lives. The many distractions available to the characters in the novel serve to help them avoid their lack of spiritualism, harsh emotion, and inferiority. Many people in the novel White Noise use distraction in order to avoid nuisances in their lives and the reasons why these people create these distractions for themselves will be discussed. To begin with, the characters in the novel use avoidance to stay apart. their lack of spirituality. Almost everyone in the town of Blacksmith goes to the supermarket as if it were a place of worship because they lack spiritualism. The characters in the novel then shop at the supermarket to distract themselves from the fact that they lack spiritualism. According to Murray, “this place recharges us spiritually, it prepares us, it’s like a gateway or a path.” (37) When Murray says this, he speaks for many Blacksmith residents who frequent the supermarket. Murray and the others all go to the supermarket regularly like you might go to church. It is in a church that people are normally “spiritually recharged,” but as Murray says, it is in the supermarket that they become spiritually recharged. Because of their lack of spiritualism and the way they use the supermarket to distract themselves from this deficiency, they are continually drawn to the supermarket every week to achieve the false sense of spirituality...... middle of paper. ..... it's hard. emotion with distractions such as weather forecasting, lecturing on Hitler, and taking pills that prevent fear of death. Furthermore, they ignore their own inferiority by allowing themselves to be sidelined due to name changing, having a massive historical figure such as Hitler to teach, and shopping. It's clear that the things people find uncomfortable in their lives are often distracted from their daily activities through distractions. These nuisances are avoided so that the person feels more confident and has a better idea of their life, because no matter what bothers them or makes them feel inferior, they will find a way to make sure that it does not happen. For example, Jack changes his name and wears glasses and a cape just to match the image of a person who can teach Hitler studies because he thought his own image was inferior..
