Ethical documentIntroductionIn every career there is a sense of responsibility, but this responsibility is increased tenfold when you are an engineer and people use a product daily, sometimes even as a life-saving device. Therefore, an engineer's design or product must be created with the utmost responsibility to ensure quality and safety. According to Michael Boelter, “…you have a responsibility to use them wisely. You cannot avoid this responsibility...." (MAE 400, 2014) Sometimes in an industrial project with all the budget constraints and time limits, this aspect can be easily overlooked and ignored until it or too late. This is exactly what happened in the "Morales Incident", where everything is an ethical dilemma and no one seemed to care until the unexpected happened. factory in order to develop a new paint remover product in order to gain an advantage over the competition Chemitoil While Chemitoil, Phaust's competitor, introduces a new paint stripper likely to conquer the market, Phaust managers decide to develop a new product. To save money in manufacturing, Phaust decided to build a new chemical plant in Mexico. To design the new plant, Phaust hired a chemical engineer, Fred Martinez, a former consultant for Chemitoil. Phaust's parent company in France cuts all budgets by 20%. Chuck, vice president of engineering at Phaust, strongly encourages Fred to reduce construction costs. Fred is faced with several engineering decisions in which ethical considerations play a major role. After the first batch of the Phaust product, it is clear that it is...... middle of paper...... the project will follow all the rules since they know it will pay off in the end. The lesson they will learn is that sometimes the start-up cost is high, but in the end the business pays for itself and makes big profits by doing the right thing. If the second situation were implemented, the project would have stopped. Since Fred knows it is unethical to build a factory with so many defects and put everyone at risk. Choosing not to approve the company's plans would most likely cost him the job at Phaust, but he would be at peace knowing he did the right thing. It would also teach the company that they need to make safe and ethical designs or they won't be able to run the plans with a PE professional. This will help them choose better strategies to solve industrial problems and gain an edge over their competitors..
