    2. Tiananmen Incident The incident began when Hu, a student's favorite reformist politician, died on April 15, 1989. He was a Chinese reformer or considered one by many, due to the many policies he implemented during his service, as he proposed some of the changes to be made within the government, making it more transparent and removing some government control over the economy. All these changes made made him very popular among the population, especially among students, many of whom were very frustrated with the bureaucracy, corruption and strict party control over the government. Thousands of people gathered for a final goodbye at his funeral. As more mourners arrived in Beijing, small groups of people began clashing with police. People began to feel very dissatisfied with the government's response to Hu's death as well as their long-standing grievances. It was for this reason that they began to form unions and committees to protest. Despite this, the majority of demonstrators still did not want the overthrow of the current party, but demanded the implementation of serious reforms. That said, on April 26 itself, a turning point occurred when the party's official newspaper, People's Daily, published a front-page editorial titled "It is necessary to take a clear stand against the unrest, thereby blaming the "very small segments of opportunists" who were plotting to overthrow the Communist Party and the political system.
