The controversy here is that studies have been done to show that there is a theory of multiple intelligence. The study shows that there are nine different types of learning and intelligence, but standardized tests only focus on the logical-mathematical and linguistic parts (Gardner). In other words, children may appear unintelligent because they don't do well on standardized tests, but they may excel at another type of intelligence, such as musical or existential. However, these children will never appear intelligent to the state, because you cannot tell from a standardized test that a child is intelligent in any category other than logic-mathematics and linguistics, which causes bias.
