This disease is the most common case of hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid. As mentioned earlier, hyperthyroidism is excessive production of thyroid hormones. “The cause of the overproduction of hormones comes from the immune system which attacks the thyroid gland” (Toft, 2014), responsible for metabolism. This disease is not seen in random cases, it is hereditary, meaning it is passed down from a family member, but women are more likely to develop it than men. Some of the symptoms are fatigue, difficulty sleeping, bulging eyes, and excessive sweating, to name a few. Since most symptoms are visible, such as an enlarged thyroid and bulging eyes, a routine physical exam is more than enough to diagnose a patient. Unfortunately, for people diagnosed with this condition, there is no treatment that can stop the thyroid gland from producing too much hormone. Although Graves' disease is not treatable, certain combinations of medications can control the disease.
