It is obvious that this woman is part of the upper social class for many reasons. In the background there seems to be a guy just standing there looking like a servant. There is also someone playing an instrument for her. Luxurious items such as a hookah, a bed, and a back garden surround this woman, indicating the lush life she leads in the Orient. With all these luxurious aspects of the painting, the painting itself also looks rather lavish. However, Denny describes a situation where a professor at an American university was giving a lecture on this particular topic including this painting as an example and as this painting "was projected on the screen, a number of Middle Easterners in the audience looked made a very sudden gesture." departure from the room” (270). When I read this I was quite surprised because I didn't think a group of people would actually come out of the room. However, the action of leaving clearly shows what type of audience these paintings were made for. These images were not intended for the Islamic world, but rather were fantasies of such a foreign place. This case is a great example of exotic Orientalism because it confirms Denny's statements that this is what a Westerner saw when thinking about the Orient. This also proves that Easterners disagree because that's not how their world was.
