The Romans discovered new societal and technological innovations that led their empire to become a sustainable society. These innovations contributed to the success and peace of the Roman Empire. They helped keep everyone happy, including the vanquished, and prevented wars from breaking out within the empire. Technological innovations have helped citizens live comfortable and healthy lives. New innovations included new beneficial laws. The last king of Rome was Tarquin the Proud. A cruel tyrant, he was driven from power in 509 BC. The Romans declared that they would never again be ruled by a king. Instead, they established a republic, the Latin phrase res publica, meaning "public affairs." A republic is a form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote for their leaders. (page 156)This innovation was one of the keys to the success of the Roman Empire. The king was a tyrant and having no limits to his power did not make the empire peaceful. The innovation was to establish a republic so that citizens could vote for their leader and could not be abused by the ruler. Rome had different laws and treatment for different parts of its conquered territory. The Latins neighboring the Tiber became full citizens of Rome. In the father territories of Rome, conquered peoples enjoyed all the rights of Roman citizenship except voting. (page 158) This innovation was important in making the empire a success because the lenient policy towards the vanquished prevented their resistance and helped them be content. Except for the custom of voting, they could feel like real citizens. As the empire grew, it became unstable and complicated. The Romans decided that a formation led by a dictator would be middle of paper. Their method of solid construction was one of the architectural world's most notable historical successes. In conclusion, the innovations adopted by the Romans were far greater than anyone could imagine. Without their innovations in new laws, architecture and their ideas, the world today would not be like this. The laws would probably not satisfy everyone and the world would not be at peace. There would be no concrete, well-constructed buildings to live in.
