  • Essay / Literature Review on Patety and Stress in the Workplace

Literature Review: There are many reports on stress at work or within the organization. One could easily conclude that everyone, everywhere is depressed and discouraged. Every employee feels stress related to their work. Many employees complain about their jobs, their bosses and their subordinates. It therefore became necessary to release the pressure sufficiently to allow workers to calm down and return to work without stress. Workplace stress has been increasing for many years, but management has not taken it seriously (Ira S. Wolfe). Stress is a condition that occurs when one realizes the pressures on oneself or that the demands of a situation are larger than one's own expectations. recognition that they are capable of managing. If these demands persist for a longer period of time without any interval, mental, physical or other behavioral problems may occur (Health & Safety Executive UK). Stress is an individual's reaction to an environmental force that affects their individual performance. (Kahn et al. 1964 & Selye, 1956). Job stress has also been considered dysfunctional for organizations, their employees, and their managers (Wolfe, Quinn, Kahn, Snoek, & Rosenthal, 1964). There is a link between anxious stress and employee satisfaction and performance. Reduced anxiety and stress improves employee performance (Donnelly and Ivancevich, 1975). For the present study, stress was conceptualized as consisting of four psychiatric conditions that reduce the employee's job performance. One is depression (feelings of loneliness, fed up, discouragement and loss of sexual desire), the second is anxiety (frequency of stomach aches, heartburn, weak or little dizziness, trembling hands, feeling of fear and avoidance of things). The third is cognitive impairment (experience ...... middle of paper ...... e which can psychologically affect employees (Beehr, Jex, Stacy & Murray, 2000). Three other important relationships are known and considered as psychosocial determinants of employee mental and physical health This is the relationship between: • the employee and their work • the employee and other people in the workplace the employee and the organization. The greatest attention should be paid to “to what extent are deficiencies in these areas harmful” The concepts of work stress also show “how work can be beneficial to employee satisfaction and favorable work”. to health include many factors. These factors include: interesting and challenging tasks, legitimate responsibility, opportunities for the individual to succeed, appreciation of achievements, and opportunity for growth and advancement of the individual.
